Working on Film and TV projects

Hi All,

Thanks for coming back to another week in our blog! This week we would love to share some stories from previous sound work for short film and TV, explaining how no project is ever the same. There has been plenty of plugging of The Backdater film over our recent posts. This is a very special project in which we have been lucky enough to be the full sound department from boom and sound recording on set to soundtrack and sound mix. This film is now in very late stages of edit and is not far off of competition.

It’s always lots of fun on set, meeting new people from crew to actors and finding out who we all are and what we have done previously. It’s always interesting hearing other people’s stories. Being on set it’s always a long day but when it is planned out well is very rewarding. Something that fascinates me is seeing an actor go from normal into acting out a scene People are so different, some actors need to and quiet in order to get ready for a scene and require no distractions in order to stay in character and others just jump in and out of scenes without and buffer time.

As a boom operator there are so many factors to think about from not getting in the way of camera and actors, boom shadow, room acoustics assuring that we achieve the best microphone location.

Have you ever thought about the process that goes into a film or TV program and how much of what you are watching and listening to is from the moment they filmed and what is added after? In an ideal world filming is done with 0 background noise and everything is built up from this in the edit. It really is a magical process seeing everything coming together from the original days of filming.

Whether filming a short film or working on a commercial job for a big TV studio the fundamentals are the same. The only factors that change are the scale of the production and the amount of equipment that is used.

Finally I wanted to share with you something that no one ever expects and that is when you work on something and pour your heart into it and then it doesn’t get published. I have many projects that have been completed and put out for the world to see but that has been a couple of projects that have been completed and then either the program or short film doesn’t get released.
